Review: Sometimes it is good to turn back to the old wise Bible and try to understand its content and morality in reflection of modern life. A Serious Man raises constant question and dilemmas of our everyday through the prism of religion and obedience. It may sound way to boring but everything you see in A Serious Man can be called anything but boring. This movie is set in 1960 years in American Jewish community. Larry Gopnik is a normal professor in the local university and he is pretty content with his present life. At the moment he has everything he ever dreamed off – nice interesting teaching work, attractive loving wife and smart son. However things changes pretty quickly for him and quite soon he finds out that his slow happy life is totally ruined. In one day his beloved wife announces that she decided to leave him and want to live with another man, his son has messed up with drugs and involved in some criminal business and his nice job is endangered by some evil foreign student who failed tests and now seeking for revenge through blackmailing administration that cause investigation in the university. Absolutely ruined he still believes in god and tries to find out what he did wrong in his life. Larry visits many rabbis and considers that they can explain all his troubles but instead he gets only allusions and advices. Despite all his troubles he doesn’t blame God in his troubles he only looks for the way out of that sinkhole. All the plot of the movie and suffering of absolutely innocent Larry who can’t even imagine why he got all these punishment clearly reflects main ideas of Testament book of Job from Bible. It is the story of wealthy guy who was tested by God and Satan for his faith and eventually was rewarded for his firmness. However it is unclear till the very end of this exciting film whenever Larry would be able to get to normal life and how all this situation would be resolved. There is great tension and absolutely unpredictable events till the very last minute. Ethan Coen is very complex director, his style is absolutely unique. Some people adore his films and others blame him for every single detail. However this masterpiece was nominated for Oscar and that mean that it could become best movie of the year.
